Choosing pavers for your driveway, patio, or pool deck involves more decisions than most Polk County and Hillsborough County homeowners expect. Material, color, pattern, texture, and border treatment all affect the final look, durability, and cost. After installing over 4,000 projects from Lakeland to Tampa, here's our practical guide to making those choices.
Materials That Work Best in Central Florida
Concrete Pavers
The most popular choice across Polk and Hillsborough County and for good reason. Concrete pavers come in a huge range of colors, shapes, and textures. They're strong, consistent, and the most budget-friendly per square foot. Modern concrete pavers can convincingly mimic natural stone or brick at a fraction of the cost. We install concrete pavers on the majority of Lakeland, Winter Haven, and Brandon projects. Best for driveways, patios, walkways, and pool decks.
Brick Pavers
Classic clay brick offers a timeless, warm look that pairs especially well with Lakeland's historic homes and craftsman-style architecture. Brick is extremely durable and holds its color because it's baked all the way through. The trade-off: a more limited range of colors (reds, browns, earth tones) and shapes compared to concrete. Popular in Bartow's historic district and Lakeland's South Side neighborhoods.
Travertine
A natural stone that's surged in popularity across Central Florida, especially for pool decks. Travertine stays noticeably cooler underfoot in direct sun — a significant advantage when your pool deck bakes under Polk County's 95-degree summer days. It has a naturally elegant surface with unique veining. We install travertine pool decks throughout Apollo Beach, Riverview, FishHawk, and Lakeland. Higher cost but worth it around pools.
Natural Stone
Flagstone, bluestone, and slate offer one-of-a-kind beauty. No two pieces are identical. Natural stone is the premium option in both appearance and price. Works beautifully for patios, walkways, and accent areas on upscale properties in Westchase, Carrollwood, and South Lakeland.
Choosing a Pattern
The laying pattern affects both look and performance:
- Herringbone (45° or 90°): The strongest pattern for driveways and vehicle traffic. The interlocking angles distribute weight and resist shifting. This is our go-to recommendation for driveways across Polk and Hillsborough County.
- Running bond: A clean, simple look similar to a brick wall laid flat. Works well for walkways, patios, and modern Florida homes.
- Basketweave: Pairs of pavers alternating horizontal and vertical. Traditional and elegant, popular for patios in Winter Haven and Auburndale.
- Stacked bond (grid): Aligned in a straight grid. Very modern and minimal. Best for patios and contemporary homes in Tampa and Lutz.
- Circular/fan: Radiating patterns that create a focal point. Often used around fire pits and as driveway medallions.
Color Tips for Florida Homes
- Lighter colors stay cooler underfoot — critical for pool decks and sun-exposed patios in our climate. Popular across all Polk and Hillsborough County pool deck projects.
- Darker colors show less dirt and staining but absorb more heat. Better for driveways and shaded patios.
- Multi-tone blends hide imperfections and staining better than solid colors. We recommend these for most Central Florida driveways since they stay looking clean longer between professional cleanings.
- Match your home's exterior. Bring your roof color, trim color, or existing stone into your paver palette for a cohesive look.
For texture, tumbled pavers have a rustic, aged appearance while smooth pavers look more contemporary. Tumbled surfaces also provide better traction when wet — an important consideration for Florida's daily summer rain.
